PREFACE
The purpose of the International Society for Stereology (ISS), founded in 1961 and incorporated in 1963, is to promote the exchange and dissemination of information, amongst persons of various scientific disciplines and countries, regarding Stereology - nominally the science of determining the spatial structure of materials - on the basis of sections and projections through the materials. Stereology also embraces the analysis of planar images per se, and three- dimensional probes of materials. A prime concern of the Society is all practical applications of Stereology. The ISS also promotes such associated fields as Image Analysis and Processing, Stochastic Geometry,
Mathematical Morphology, Pattern Recognition, and Fractal Geometry. A more recent interest has arisen in Biology and Medicine with respect to the above mentioned keywords. ECS10, the 10th European Congress of Stereology and Image Analysis, was held in Milan (Italy) during June 22-26, 2009, as part of the ISS quadrennial European Conferences, which are intertwined with the series of the quadrennial International Conferences on Stereology. The aim of ECS10 has been to bring together leading scientists working on recent advances on methods in Stereology, Geometrical and Topological tools, Wavelets, Stochastic geometry and related Statistical methods, Spatial processes, Pattern analysis, Texture evaluation, Fractals, Image enhancement, 3D reconstruction, Shape analysis, Pattern formation, etc. and emerging areas of applications such as Micro- and nanostructures, Biology and Medicine, Biotechnology, Agriculture, Materials, Tomography, etc.
The Conference has attracted about 200 participants from all over the world; in particular it has offered a unique opportunity for young scientists to meet many internationally recognized experts.
We are sure that it has been instrumental in furthering interactions for joint research and exchange of information among groups across disciplinary silos. We have been witnessing intense discussions between mathematicians, statisticians, engineers, biologists, medical scientists, etc. This volume has been printed on the basis of manuscripts submitted by electronic form. The manuscripts of Sections 2 and 3 have been submitted to the standard peer review system by international experts in the field.
On behalf of the Board of the Society, I wish to thank all those who directly or indirectly have contributed to the success of the Conference: participants, speakers, the International Scientific Committee, and the Local Committee. Special thanks are due to Viktor Beneš who kept a continuous and active eye on the scientific programme.
We wish also to thank the Rector of the University of Milan, the Director of the Department of Mathematics, and the Board of ADAMSS (the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Applied Mathematical and Statistical Sciences) for their continuous support and financial contribution. Thanks are also due to many national and international organizations for their important auspices.
Very special thanks are due to the Local Committee, and to the Managing Team, for their dedication and professional commitment at the highest levels, during the whole preparation and running of the Conference. In particular I wish to mention the core group of the whole organization, including Giacomo Aletti, Alessandra Micheletti and Daniela Morale, who did not sleep during the last four months, and the youngest members of the team, Enea Bongiorno and Irene Matuonto, for
the excellent production of these Proceedings. I will not forget the Esculapio Publishing House, in Bologna, for hosting the volume in their series.

Chairman of the Conference
